Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust

When looking to replace its existing Electronic Patient Record (EPR), Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust had ambitions to improve its quality of care, clinical safety, patient experience and productivity.

Rio, our future-proof EPR system for community, mental and child health providers, has helped Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust to provide better, safer, patient-centred care

Lancashire and South Cumbria have three clinical networks; mental health, community and wellbeing, and children and young people. Since 2017, we have supported the Trust throughout a phased implementation of Rio. Helping to improve the patient experience, Rio gives clinicians up-to-date information about their patients at the point of care.

Making migrating smooth

In June 2019, The Trust migrated the majority of its legacy patient administration system (PAS) records from its 53 clinical services across 85 sites, over to Rio. The complex migration included moving 730,000 demographics, 99,000 referrals and approximately 10,500 waiting list comments. Despite the complex and daunting process, thanks to our support, the migration ran smoothly.

Information in Rio can also be shared easily with other providers, including those in primary care and social care. The Trust now has the ability to share patient records across many services – including various providers across Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Accessing clinical documents across care

Rio is Lancashire and South Cumbria’s core EPR, where information can be shared across multiple systems. The Trust has been using Rio to feed into the Lancashire Person Record Exchange Service (LPRES), a Shared Care Record, which integrates health and social care organisations across Lancashire and South Cumbria, and allows them to share key patient information with GPs, ambulance service, acute hospitals and A&Es.

LPRES uses the Medical Interoperability Gateway (MIG) to send clinical documents to over 300 GP practices.

Once the Rio deployment is complete, we will have one patient record; no matter if we are creating a podiatry patient or a mental health patient, we have a single view of a patient’s needs.

They have always been helpful and takes thetime to listen to our feedback. Through on-site support, we get timely responses when needed, which has been beneficial to help us understand how we can deploy Rio to its best capability, and make sure that it fits the needs of our services
