Background

Since 1969, LondonEnergy has delivered waste and resource management services for North London.

As a private company, wholly owned by the North London Waste Authority, LondonEnergy now has a team of over 350 employees.

LondonEnergy takes pride in their award-winning health and safety practice and procedures to provide a safe working environment for its employees, contractors, visitors and local community.

In 2020 and 2021, LondonEnergy received the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Silver Award for their consistent, year on year safety performance. In 2022, the company was recognised for a RoSPA Gold Award.

What were the challenges?

As an operational business, the waste and recycling plants are to be supervised at all times to reduce liability, cost and environmental impacts. Employees are contracted with different shift patterns to accommodate this need.

Changing shift patterns presented numerous challenges for the HR team when trying to drive attendance of classroom-based training and educational activities, particularly when employees were required to commit to a full day of offsite training.

More recently, LondonEnergy have had the additional challenge of construction works, which has limited the number of available rooms suitable for in-person training on their premises.

What were the requirements?

LondonEnergy recognised a need to invest in a mobile-responsive learning management system (LMS) which could empower employees to access learning courses 24/7, anytime, anywhere.

“It was important for us to find a learning management system that is accessible online to give our people the flexibility to be able to complete training and development courses at their own pace, at a time convenient to them,” says Abbie Benjamin, Senior HR Business Partner at LondonEnergy Ltd.

We were looking for a LMS that could support our strategy to encourage and motivate employees to be responsible for their own learning and development, as well as further enhance our continuous learning culture. Its capabilities also needed to be able to help us to change attitudes and behaviours towards training and development,” continues Abbie.

By defining and enhancing its training and development programme with a learning management system, the HR team would be able to offer the same resources and opportunities to all employees, including those whose shift patterns involved unsociable times.

The investigation and selection

LondonEnergy researched the market for a learning management system, eventually selecting Access Learning.

Access Learning appealed to LondonEnergy as it could provide its people with an extensive database of readily available Health & Safety, Compliance & CSR, and Workplace Skills courses.

The self-service and mobile functionality offered all employees, including shop floor workers, the ability to access  learning  at any time, from anywhere.

Since selecting Access Learning, we have received regular communication from the Access People team. The training and meetings we’ve attended have been incredibly beneficial as we have learnt a lot about the learning management system’s functionality and capabilities, such as how to create pathways, add members, etc.

The results

  • Employees can learn anywhere, anytime on any device
  • Greater efficiencies from their training budget by reducing the need for costly and time-consuming face-to-face training
  • Improved compliance and employee productivity
  • Ability to design bespoke training and certification
  • Better visibility of training data
  • Improved employee engagement

Access Learning – branded for internal use as the LondonEnergy Academy - has solved many of LondonEnergy’s key challenges, providing the freedom and flexibility for employees to engage with training and development online, rather than waiting for in-person training. In turn, LondonEnergy achieved greater efficiencies from their training budget, and saw further improvements in compliance and productivity.

The bite-sized courses allow ‘shop floor’ workers to stagger their training at a time convenient to them and the business. This ensures that the waste and recycling plants can remain supervised and operational at all times, as required. Employees no longer need to commit to attending a full day of classroom-based training.

“Access Learning allows us to set and define standards, centralise training and pathways for career development, add bespoke learning modules, and offer training certification. We can also export reports from the LMS to monitor performance and productivity,” says Abbie.

In the initial 10 weeks since onboarding, the HR team have rolled out 8 mandatory health and safety training modules. In that timeframe, over 80% of the business have undertaken over 1575 hours of essential training.

“Access Learning allows us to reinforce the statement to our employees that we have invested in them, as we now have access to a variety of engaging learning courses, which are readily available to support them with their training and career development opportunities – and it is really easy to use,” concludes Abbie.

LondonEnergy has also taken advantage of the resources available in the Customer Portal, such as the knowledge-based articles and webinar videos, etc.
