Kings' College Hospital is a large NHS Acute Hospital located in Southeast London. As a member of the prestigious Shelford Group, Kings' College Hospital employs 15,000 full-time equivalent staff and approximately 10,000 bank staff. The hospital is dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare services and continuously seeks effective and innovative ways to improve staff training and development.
The Journey with Bookboon:
The relationship between Kings' College Hospital and Bookboon spans three different organisations and has been ongoing since Bookboon’s early days. The individual leading the relationship, who has had firsthand experience with Bookboon across multiple organisations, was one of the first customers. From the start, they were drawn to Bookboon’s concept, and this initial interest has developed into a strong partnership. An important aspect of the ongoing relationship is the continuity of customer support.
The same Customer Relationship Manager, Beatriz Gil, has been a key asset throughout the journey, providing consistent and reliable support. During a difficult phase when Bookboon was acquired by the Access Group, there was a moment when the hospital was considering discontinuing the service. However, Beatriz played a crucial role in stabilising the situation and restoring confidence in the platform. Despite recent challenges related to usage, Beatriz remains determined to help Kings' College Hospital regain engagement and restore usage numbers.
We were one of the first batch of customers and we’ve loved it from the outset!
Kings' College Hospital sought a platform that provided a variety of learning materials in different formats to accommodate the diverse learning preferences of its large workforce. The decision to choose Bookboon as a learning solution was driven by positive experiences and the impact it had at other organisations. Employee adoption of Bookboon was initially strong when the hospital could directly promote the platform to staff through targeted emails and communications.
The primary metric used to measure the return on investment (ROI) has been the number of titles accessed. One of the main challenges faced by the hospital has been an executive decision to ban direct promotion of Bookboon courses to staff. This restriction has made it harder to engage employees with the learning platform. The hospital is currently exploring workarounds to maintain engagement. One effective strategy suggested for other companies is to integrate Bookboon with other training programs, such as Apprenticeships, to increase its relevance and usage within the broader learning and development framework.
Despite these challenges, the hospital remains focused on overcoming organisational barriers and finding ways to enhance the platform’s impact. Currently, there are no additional features planned for the immediate future, but the hospital is determined to work with Bookboon to navigate the current limitations. There have been no specific suggestions for improving Bookboon at this time, reflecting general satisfaction with the service as it stands.

The support provided by Beatriz Gil has been exceptional, and it is often cited as the main reason for Kings' College Hospital's continued use of Bookboon. The quality of the products offered by Bookboon is also highly regarded. The relationship with Beatriz, has been a longstanding one, extending across multiple organisations. This continuity has been highly beneficial, ensuring a deep understanding of the hospital’s needs and requirements.
Kings' College Hospital would recommend Bookboon and Access as a company, acknowledging that the platform is effective for many organisations. The hospital has encountered some organisational hurdles in using Bookboon, particularly around promoting it directly to staff. Moving forward, Kings' College Hospital hopes to find solutions to these challenges to continue leveraging the platform’s offerings effectively.
Despite being a high-cost product, Bookboon’s value for money is under scrutiny due to the organisational limitations currently in place. However, the hospital remains committed to working with Access and Bookboon to ensure that they can maximise their investment. The hospital continues to evaluate the impact of Bookboon on their learning and development processes and looks forward to exploring potential solutions to enhance engagement moving forward.
Kings' College Hospital’s experience with Bookboon has been largely positive, with ongoing support from their CSM being a key factor in the hospital’s continued use of the platform. While the hospital faces challenges with promoting Bookboon to staff and achieving higher usage rates, they are working to address these issues and remain committed to the platform. The hospital continues to evaluate the impact of Bookboon on their learning and development processes and looks forward to finding solutions that will enhance engagement moving forward.
The support provided by the Bookboon team is exceptional and is likely the main reason the hospital continues to use the platform. The quality of the products offered is highly valued.
