Staff shortages and winter pressures in care

Recently the government announced an immediate £162m fund that is going to help the care sector recruit and retain staff. Although this is a large sum, with 110,000 vacant roles and staff attrition at over 30% many feel this does not go far enough.

The Health and Social Care sector is now suffering from unprecedented staff shortages. This is extremely concerning as we head into winter and have to deal with the usual additional pressure that this season brings. Viruses such as colds and flu become rifer, particularly amongst those who are already vulnerable. Plus the season brings the usual increase in injuries due to poor weather conditions. On top of that, Covid-19 cases are also on the rise again.

All this adds more pressure to an already overstretched sector. It is anticipated that without social care being robust to support the NHS, the crisis is going to worsen and force the care sector to form a new way of working to ensure survival.

But what can you, as a care business do to help ease the burden?

Access Health and Social Care provide a suite of solutions that are helping our current customers ensure that they are prepared for the challenges ahead, whilst operating to the maximum efficiency.

Using Access Care and Clinical and Access Medication Management our customers can effectively record any signs of illness early and highlight those who test positive for Covid-19. Those affected can then be isolated as soon as possible, reducing the spread of the infection. Access Medication Management will also give your care home total visibility on which residents have received booster vaccines to ensure their safety.

Rostering and scheduling

Efficient rostering and scheduling will ensure that you are prepared for staff illness, annual leave and difficult weather conditions which can interfere with your carers travel. Access People Planner Residential enables you to look ahead and allocate carers to shifts and home care visits quickly, whilst accommodating annual leave requests. Inputting this information a few months ahead will give you the visibility of where you have gaps so that you can act on them sooner rather than later. Getting ahead with your rosters allows you to better accommodate carers needs and wants, better-ensuring fairness and equality.

Access People Planner also has the option for your carers to view unallocated shifts available. They can then easily opt to fill these, giving greater control over money earned.

Reducing administration

Automation is key to reducing administration. Increase productivity and lower costs through improved management and scheduling of employees. An effective screening process can speed up your onboarding process. Access People Planner Residential allows you to do all this and more.

Funding for Apprentices

Access Health and Social Care are able to offer funding towards recruiting apprentices, or upskilling existing staff. We have partnered with Impact Futures to provide this funding which is accessible until our £250,000 pot is gone. You can find out more information on Impact Futures.

In addition to the apprenticeship scheme, Access also offers a sector-based work academy scheme. This is where individuals are trained by us. Taking the burden from you and ensuring they are ready to deliver care.

Giving back to your carers with Access EarlyPay

Access EarlyPay provides your carers with the option to access their earned pay early, whenever they need it - before payday. It is not an advance or a loan, it’s simply access to the money that is already earned.

Introducing an incentive such as EarlyPay gives control back to staff over what they earn and when they earn it. The system can be preloaded with hard to fill shifts, with the option for payment available as soon as the shift is completed. Existing EarlyPay customers have stated that since implementing the system, they have seen productivity increase and have cut recruitment and staff turnover.
