No more hosting bill shock

Cost is one of the key drivers to moving to the cloud. Removing the need to invest in server hardware and the resource required to maintain it, cloud hosting is frequently promoted as a cost-effective means of delivering a reliable, secure and agile IT infrastructure.

But that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be straight forward.

Reconciling billing to usage can be a challenge

If your finance team has challenges reconciling your cloud hosting bills to what you're actually consuming, you are not alone. One of our customers (an SME with circa 200 users) shared their experience of using one of the larger, more well-known hyperscalers.

With workloads varying depending on the projects and activities being undertaken, fluctuations in resources usage were anticipated, but when they received an unexpectedly large bill, uncovering the reason for this was a challenge for both finance and IT.

When an unexpected charge arrives, it can be a challenge to sift through the complicated lines of data to work out what the additional cost is for, and what's it has been attributed to.

Aside from changes in your usage resulting in larger than expected hosting bills, there are other unexpected price hikes that you might discover. For example, some larger hosting providers will offer attractive rates for uploading and storing data in their cloud, but when it comes to downloading or accessing your data, that’s where their prices can vary greatly – and can be another reason for unexpected billing charges.

When you consider that 90% of all data that exists today was created in last 2 years – exponential growth in data is often reflected in download fees.
