With its head office based in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Chief Group has rapidly grown into a powerhouse since its inception in 2007.

The company has evolved from a modest plant hire enterprise to a full-fledged turnkey solution provider in civil construction, specialising in earthmoving, pavement construction and rail infrastructure projects. 

Chief owns and operates a diverse range of equipment including excavators, graders, loaders, bulldozers, compaction equipment ensuring optimal productivity tailored to each project’s requirements. 

Employing upwards of 100 staff members, Chief takes pride in its dedicated workforce, whose expertise and diligence drive the company’s success.

Seeking a system that could support complexity.

As Chief Group grew, so did the expectations that its systems could support the highest productivity, as Chief’s Financial Controller, Leanne Cook explained.

Leanne’s team oversees Chief’s finance, job management and accounting processes. With her background in implementing business intelligence systems, Leanne can oversee the decision-making process on which financial management software the company chooses to use.

“A system that understood Chief’s management issues was paramount for us. It was crucial that as Chief grew, so did the expectations that its systems could output the highest productivity so we could validate all the work we performed and provide digital documents for our clients in a live, real-time manner. We have been able to do this with Attaché” Leanne says.

“We have thrived by Access implementing its range of complementary apps such as People HR and Access Workspace.

“We can approve our supplier invoices from a cloud platform with workflow approval processes and ensure our invoices haven’t been compromised. We have also been able to install Zahara and customise this to interface with Attaché. We also interface with Powerlink for our job costing and Cloud270 apps,” Leanne says.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic we went 100% digital and have automated our employees’ timesheets, so we have instant visibility over job time, detailed timesheets, and have these produce our billing and payroll processes.”

“Our logistics team can also manage their teams remotely and provide our clients with information at any time from their phone, tablet, or PC.”

When asked what advice she’d give to other organisations thinking about changing their financial management software, Leanne said this:

"Make a list of your must haves. Don’t just assume because you’re paying a lot of money for a package that you will have all you need. Don’t underestimate the implementation and training processes, make sure you map out an implementation process and ensure that your consultant is able to meet those timeline requirements.”
